Here are a few reminders to put your new plants to bed for the winter and to protect your landscape investment.
Trees
Protect trunks with a tree guard or tree wrap extended from the ground to the first major branch. This is especially needed for Maple and Crabapple trees. Don't forget to remove it in the spring.
Shrubs
Most young plants will need no pruning. Spring flowering shrubs should be pruned immediately following bloom. Do not prune shrub roses until spring. Clear away any plant debris from around the base of the rose as it can harbor diseases over the winter.

Perennials
Removal of dead top growth can be done now or in the spring. Its up to you. If you do cut them back, leave a few inches to catch the snow. You will want to cut back any perennials that show signs of disease such as powdery mildew. Do not compost diseased plant material.
Evergreens
Water thoroughly until the ground freezes. Protect against moisture loss by applying Wilt Pruf®.
Mickman Brothers Garden Center carries Wilt Pruf products. Use Wilt Pruf on your Christmas tree and other greens to keep them from drying out.
Endless Summer Hydrangea
Adding an insulating blanket of dry leaves will help a young plant through the winter. Do not prune until spring. For care tips, click here.
Water
If we have extended periods with limited rain this fall, please water all your plants enough so they are not stressed. Trees should be watered in late fall just prior to the soil freezing. For more watering tips, click here.
